Book Review of Mildred Muhammad’s Scared Silent

Scared Silent: The Mildred Muhammad Story by Mildred Muhammad

victory

Scared Silent by Mildred Muhammad is one of the most riveting true stories I’ve ever read. While I was reading Mildred Muhammad’s novel, I kept thinking to myself, there’s no way that this could actually be someone’s true life story. There’s no way that this could be real. In reality and in truth, this is a true story of a woman who overcame more in the years of her life than most of us could even imagine.

Mildred Muhammad tells her story of how she came through darkness into the light while married to the “D.C. Sniper”. John Muhammad was a killer, and she was married to this killer. Unbeknownst to her, she was his intended target. He wanted to kill her. Mildred Muhammad is a true survivor, a loving mother, and an advocate for women who are threatened by domestic violence.

Her story is inspirational and educational. There is much to learn about survival, the many forms of domestic violence, victims, true crime and the meaning of true love, self love in Mildred Muhammad’s novel. It’s an absolute page turner. I finished this book in just a couple of days. If you have some time and wish to learn about the true survivor behind the silence, pick up Scared Silent by Mildred Muhammad. I recommend this book to therapists, survivors of domestic abuse, and fans of true crime novels.

My Book Review of From Foster Care To Fabulous by Capri Cruz

FROM FOSTER CARE TO FABULOUS:An Imperative MovementFROM FOSTER CARE TO FABULOUS:An Imperative Movement by Capri C. Cruz

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received an autographed copy of “From Foster Care to Fabulous: An Imperative Movement” from Ms. Capri Cruz when I had met her at the 2014 Helping Women Succeed in Atlanta Spring Empowerment Summit. Meeting her was such a delight. Ms. Cruz is very down to earth and it’s no wonder her story moved me the way that it did. First, Ms. Cruz does not dumb down the facts of what it was like for her growing up in the foster care system. She opens up about her childhood trauma and what it took for her to become the beautiful and inspirational woman that she is today. Capri’s journey from her traumatic experiences and all that she had to go through to turn at all into wisdom and most of all love to share with us in her incredible novel, is truly brave and commendable. What I took from the story was so much more deeper than any words could describe. It was like a friend who has so much passion and love to share with me, just opened up and gave me this gift of their story of not only surviving and overcoming the odds, but about how to be a thriving, spiritual person who can appreciate the true value of life, love, and being fabulous. I recommend this book to parents of foster children, adults who are considering foster care/adoption, and young adult foster youth. Capri Cruz’s “From Foster Care to Fabulous” is an incredibly moving story of hard work, hope and love.

Room On The Shelf

Everyone has a story to tell. We all have thoughts and feelings. Therefore, we have the right to express ourselves.

Do you like to read? Are you a lover of books? Whether you are a fan of fiction or non-fiction, you can agree that it’s hard to put down a good book that has an intriguing plot.

So what’s the deal with the war over realism and fantasy? Does it really matter if your imagination craves the tales of vampires, werewolves, and unicorns? As opposed to, if you enjoy reading stories of struggle, survival, and coming of age. Do you really have to choose to be a fan of one particular genre?

Reading is essential for everyone. We should be encouraging more people to pick up a book to read. We shouldn’t judge the book by it’s genre, but by it’s content.

As a writer of realistic YA-fiction, I can honestly say that I enjoy reading a variety of books of different genres. Classics, thrillers, fantasy, coming of age, tales of endurance and survival, and even some humorous poetry all have a place on my bookshelf.

It’s the same with writing. We, as writers, should stick together and encourage one another. Writing should not be a competition. No matter what genre each of us write, we should support each other.  All of our stories are not the same, and that is a good thing. How are we to encourage others to read, if there isn’t a variety of different stories to peak our readers’ interests?

The truth is, we all have a story. We all have a voice. We all have something inside of us that needs to come out. That is why we write. Therefore, we have the right to express ourselves with our writing talent.

Really. Where is the competition?

Whether we are vampires, werewolves, detectives, cowboys, aliens, or real people who live in a fictional or non-fictional world there is room on the shelf for our stories. Writers, let’s support each other in being heard. Devoted readers will make room on their shelves for all of our incredible stories.
